Faithful Men

Image
In the states and other developed countries it seems most men are driven to work work work, concentrating on their careers and the pursuit of material things. Many of the men in Uganda seem to be different. So many in our congregation are very zealous and set wonderful examples in taking the lead in their families and the preaching work. Although they are very busy, it's inspiring how they take and make the time for spiritual things. It's also interesting to see the many men we come across in our ministry that seem to have a deep spiritual inclination and a hungry curiosity for the Bible and God. Steven has many Bible studies with such men. It's so encouraging to see how well they prepare their lessons and to hear their very heartfelt comments and expression. They always have many questions which is a clear indication of their motive and desire. We can learn so much from these men. Live for God, not money and you'll never be poor. "Step Over Into Macedonia"

Image
After journeying near and far the apostle Paul wanted to know where he should preach and teach next. A message from God came “step over into Macedonia”. -Acts 16:9. With that in mind every year here in Uganda and across Africa Jehovah's Witnesses engage in what we call “Macedonia campaigns”. On Saturdays during the summer special efforts are made to visit more remote towns and villages to teach the people there.   What a blessing it was to be a part of it for our first time! The people were hungry for spiritual truths, which made it a true honor to take part in feeding them Bible knowledge. Many children followed us curiously butting-in on each new conversation. “More books! More books! More books plllllease?!” Their mismatched tattered clothes and dusty bear-feet were reminders of how much these people need hope of something better.   The message of God's kingdom and it's blessing brought light to their eyes and a smile to their faces. Their reaction i...

HOME. We were flooded by a rush of emotions stepping off the plane; mostly relief and excitement with a tinge of sadness thinking of our family and friends we had to leave behind. We picked up our car in Kampala when we came from the airport Thursday. Then Friday morning we set out for our new hometown Mbarara which is 4 hours west. We actually drove ourselves here! First time!... Driving on the opposite side of the road is strange, and a little scary. I feel like Steven is going to hit everything!  Thankfully he is an excellent driver.  It was beautiful journey from Kampala to Mbarara. A mountainous backdrop with staggered villages. A nice surprise awaited us as we neared a reserve; a herd of wild zebra grazing near the road! Of course we pulled over. I felt like a little kid at the zoo for the first time. "Zebra!!!"    Until we find our own place we are staying in the home of 2 Japanese need greaters* while they are in Japan working to retu...

Interesting... April 2015

A common toilet.  Get ready to squat & always carry TP plus sanitizer!  Did you know if you put your slightly smelly clothes in the freezer it kills bacteria and bad smells?! Why we froze clothes! Hand washing everything in a bucket-  not fun! Giant birds eating lots of garbage. No trash pick up so garbage is burned. Thankfully this was not a common site. Usually the trash hills are much smaller and more hidden. "Niki" means "what is" in the local language Runyankore.   It's just meant to be! =) People up top, cows below!

Uganda equator. Many think because it's on the equator it's super hot. But it's actually very cool many days. In Mbarara- the 50's (F) at night, & never higher than 80 in daytime.  Plus low humidity, unlike our home Florida. We like =) A Niki creation because we were nervous to eat anything else our first trip. Tuna & rice topped with potato chips!  Some new lil friends.   Ah Mbarara, the beautiful walk home from the ministry. Big money!.... not really, it's only like $30 US dollars.
